PRODUCT LAB PODCAST EPISODE #002

Nicole Jarbo joins us to chat Boost, her startup where she's creating financial wisdom and tools that work for the next generation. β€œThe biggest ai disruption I see coming are products that help everyday people. I think they've been historically underfunded and that's where we now have the most opportunity to do something new that actually helps people. ” - Nicole Jarbo

ON THE FUTURE OF WORK & PERSONAL FINANCE

1/ First off, who is the average Boost user and how do they reflect what you think the future of work and personal finance is?

"The average Boost user is 18-25. Skewing women oriented. These are folks are creative souls. Lots of multi-hyphenates, they might be actor/singers or they do graphic design on the side, maybe do some writing or research. These are young folks who are monetizing across all their talents and skills and heavily reflective of the future of work in general. "

2/ Why is Boost so focused on Gen Z?

"We focus on young people because they have that mindset that they can do whatever they want to do. They haven't been afflicted with this sense of duty & conformity when it comes to work and life. It's the most fun, most meaningful place to build because these people still have hopes and dreams that haven't been dashed by corporate America, life and mortgages."

3/ What's critical to the future of personal finances?

"It's like all these fintech products want to separate people from their money. And that has two meanings; first the actual "give me your money and pay me for things" meaning, but secondly the more meta meaning of like "these products are trying to make your money movement opaque to you". So many products are not giving people transparency to their cash and it causes loss of control of their finances. Transparency is critical. Another critical constraint is friction. Defining what needs to be automated, because it is convenient or helpful, and what we need to keep manual and full friction so you build competence and confidence over time. I want to hold a hard line about this friction concept even when it means we need to make a bunch of stuff manual processes that we could automate easily because friction teaches. And It's extremely difficult to unlearn something you have been taught. If we automate everything and don't teach young people, we take away their ability to understand their cashflow and streams of income, we are taking away their ability to meet their goals and dreams.
